Sharpen your pencils, crack the books, and iron your first day of school outfit. It’s almost that time of year. Whether you’re eager to start the new semester or dreading the upcoming heaps of homework (or some combination of those feelings), here are a few songs to get you in the mood for school. So, listen and learn.
“ABC” by Jackson 5
In my research for this blog, I came across a lot of songs lot that make a connection between academic learning and learning about love. But I think this one takes the cake. “Reading, writing, and arithmetic are the branches of the learning tree. But without the roots of love every day, girl, your education ain’t complete.” Go ahead and sing along on the school bus. You can’t fight it with this song.
“Education” by The Kinks
There are some things you can learn in school, and then there are some things you can’t. This song by The Kinks is an ode to all kinds of learning, for everyone: “Teacher, teach me about nuclear physics, and teach me about the structure of man. But all your endless calculations can’t tell me why I am.” Yeah, we don’t have the answers to those questions either. So let’s just keep rocking out until then.
“The Art Teacher” by Rufus Wainwright
If you’ve ever had a teacher-crush, you can probably relate to the story in this song, at least partly. A woman remembers an art teacher she had as a girl, and says she hasn’t loved anyone the same since then. “He asked us what our favorite work of art was, but never could I tell–it was him. Oh, I wish I could tell him. Oh, I wish I could have told him.” I never really liked art class, but I do like this song.
“Play it Cool, Stay in School” by Brenda Holloway
This song is so groovy, playing it more might just lower the high school dropout rate. Brenda Holloway kills it. Here are her words of advice:“Play it smart and play it cool. You’ll never play the part of a fool. ‘Cause when you learn more, you’re bound to earn more. When you stay in school.” And you can’t argue with that.
“I Wish I Could Go Back to College” by Avenue Q
The musical Avenue Q is sort of like Sesame Street for grown-ups, where the characters are mostly post-college 20-somethings. In this song, the puppets reminisce about college, when the living was easy. “What would I give to go back and live in a dorm with a meal plan again!”
