It’s the most wonderful time of the year—the time when you can unabashedly watch Christmas movies every night of the week. (Well, every night might be a little too festive.) There are those classic Christmas movies—like It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street—and then there are the newer favorites. Here’s a list of my top 5 Christmas movies, which may be missing from the usual roster. So make some popcorn, turn on your flat screen TV, and grab your favorite seat in the house. You’ve got some holiday movie watching to do.
Nothing brings you back to 1990 quite like watching this movie does. With Macaulay Culkin’s iconic hands-on-the-face scream and over an hour of fun pranks, it doesn’t get much better, or more Christmas goofy, than this.
The Christmas black comedy of Christmas black comedies, this is definitely one to add to the movie marathon. There’s just something sort of heartwarming/ sort of disturbing about a drunken Santa befriending a young loner kid while stealing gifts from the mall.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This remake from 2000 (starring Jim Carrey) is funny and fantastical. Based on the Dr. Suess book, this movie tells the story of the angry Grinch who hates Christmas and everyone that celebrates it. Spoiler: he comes around in the end.
I know several people who usually don’t like rom-coms, but adore this movie. It’s set in London in December, and follows eight different intertwining plots and love stories, leading up to Christmas. Add in a powerhouse cast, and you’re in business. In Christmas movie business, that is.
I know, I know, everyone loves this movie. But really, how can you not? Will Ferrell is endearing and hilarious as the soul-searching elf, Buddy. It’s delightfully Christmas without being too delightfully Christmas.
