We’re looking forward to Summer Movies
With summer ramping up, so are the movies, and comic book superheroes are dominating the silver screen once again. But, that’s not all this summer holds, movie-wise. There’s going to be a new addition from Oliver Stone, Tim Burton, and Wes Anderson. Also, Pixar’s coming out with it’s latest gem. It’s sure to be a good summer for the movies. Here at Vann’s, there are a few we’re particularly excited about.
Prometheus
Sci-fi is having a big summer. Ridley Scott – the mastermind behind Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator – directs the sci-fi epic Prometheus, coming out June 8th. It follows a team of space explorers who uncover a mysterious discovery on an alien planet, one that may hold the key to the humankind’s origins. Disaster strikes, and the team must rush to save the human race from a horrible doom.
Total Recall
The campy sci-fi cult favorite, Total Recall, gets revamped this summer. At the helm, Colin Farrell plays Schwarzenegger’s old role, Doug Quaid. Humanity is divided into two nation states, Euromerica and New Shangai, and both struggle for control over the other. Quaid is a factory worker who suspects his memories have been fabricated to make him the perfect spy. Unsure of where his loyalty lays, Quaid becomes the center of a battle for humanity. Total Recall hits theaters August 3rd.
Men In Black 3
This summer, Men in Black returns with its third installment in the franchise. Will Smith once again plays Agent J, an operative in a secretive organization that monitors alien life on Earth. After uncovering an alien plot to assassinate his partner and change history, Agent J is sent back in time to the early 1960s. It’s a rush to save humanity in this sci-fi comedy romp. Men in Black III comes out May 25th.
The Avengers
Comics are back May 4th with the Avengers. Finally, all of those Marvel movies come together for the super powered team flick they’ve been hinting at for years. Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D., Samuel L Jackson, has gotten the gang together: Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. Assembled just in time, the Avengers have to save the Earth from Loki and his malicious army.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Peter Parker is back on the silver screen in the Amazing Spider-Man. A reboot coming out only ten years after the first Spiderman movie, it changes pace as a gritty reexamination of the New York web-slinger. Parker, Andrew Garfield, discovers a clue that could unravel the mystery of his parents disappearance as a child. It’s a path that hurtles him into Dr. Curt Connors, the former partner of his father. To become a hero, Parker if forced to make tough choices and shape his destiny as the Amazing Spider-man. The adventure begins anew July 3rd.
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman returns July 20th with The Dark Knight Rises. Almost a decade after the events in the Dark Knight, Gotham is in peril. The city is in the clutches of terrorists, the malevolent Bane chief among them. Batman, Christian Bale, returns to protect the city. Anne Hathaway enters the mix as Catwoman in this final installment in the Batman trilogy.
Brave
There’s more than just Sci-Fi and Comic book movies this summer. Pixar – the studio behind Toy Story, Up, and Wall-E – unveils Brave June 22nd. Princess Merida, voiced by Kelly Macdonald, defies custom and embarks on an adventure to save her kingdom from the brink of disaster. To return order to Scottish homeland, she’ll have to rely on her own courage and guile.
Dark Shadows
The man behind Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and Alice in Wonderland is back with Dark Shadows. Tim Burton is restyling the campy 70′s soap opera, Dark Shadows, with some familiar faces, namely Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. The vampire Barnabus Collins, Depp, is awoken from his slumber to find his home in disarray. The dated vampire helps his family sort through their dysfunctional problems. Darks Shadows hits the box office May 11th.
Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson debuts his latest quirky feature, Moonrise Kingdom, May 16th. In a remote New England town in the 1960s, a two young teens in love run away to the woods. Antics unfold as the town comes together and mobilizes to search for the missing kids. Moonrise Kingdom is studded with an all-star cast including Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand.
Savages
July 6th marks the release of Savages, a new crime thriller from Oliver Stone. Two friends, a botanist and his enforcer, share their profitable drug business and a girlfriend, Blake lively. When they refuse to join forces with a Mexican Drug cartel, Lively is kidnapped. The result? An action packed quest to save their shared girlfriend.
