Do you have any idea what’s draining your power?
Neither do I. But our ignorance may be short lived with Monster Power releasing a new app to work with their PRT family of PowerCenters that not only lets you look into what devices are taking up unnecessary power, but also allows you to remotely shut off outlets.
Shutting down outlets to conserve power isn’t a new concept for Monster, with their “green” line of power centers using a master device to control several other outlets (shut off your TV, for example, and the outlets your Blu-ray player, cable box, and game system are connected to shut off automatically), keeping devices from drawing unneeded power (called vampire power — yes I know, cool name, boring concept).
The app allows you to track what devices are drawing vampire power and shut them off. The standard models have a Wi-Fi connection built in so you can shut outlets off from up to 100′ away, but for a little extra, you can also pick up a wireless gateway that connects you online. While it won’t help you if you left the stove on (yet), it will if you left the weather channel playing just before you hopped a plane to some exotic destination (like say… Montana maybe?).
The app also allows you to set schedules for power usage to your home equipment. While you can use this to set up schedules for your stuff to be off when you know you won’t be using it, it might also be the perfect way to make sure that electronic distractions turn off when you need them to (paying attention parents?).
While you imagine the possibilities, take the time to check out some of the power management options available from Vann’s right now.
