CES 2012: 1939 meets 2012 – the Viewmaster goes digital
3D may be all the rage on televisions, game systems, and even tablets, but for those who remember their roots looking through orange plastic lenses at far flung corners of the world and comic characters, CES 2012 has brought some good news.
That’s right, Viewmaster aficionados, Fisher Price is bringing the device into the 21st century. It announced that in association with Spatial View (a 3D content distribution group), it’s bringing classic and new 3D image packs to everything from mobile devices to your television. Currently, prices are announced at $1.99 for packs of 18-21 themed images. Once you’ve downloaded a pack, throw on your 3D glasses and toss it up on the TV, or put it on your tablet, phone, or laptop and use one of the many accessories that Spatial View has planned to replicate the Viewmaster experience.
Who isn’t looking forward to using their new OLED television or iPod touch to relive those heady days of yore, switching slides? I can only hope they integrate the satisfying “cha-chick” sound you got when pulling the lever to loop through your slide — it just wouldn’t feel right without it.
